Substance Abuse

Also known as a drug or alcohol addiction, substance use disorders occur when an individual is unable to control the urge to use substances to the extent where various aspects of the individual’s life are affected. Some of the most commonly used substances are alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, opioids, cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin.

Substance use disorders can drastically affect an individual’s behavior, thinking, actions, and personal relationships; This disorder not only afflicts the individual’s life but also afflicts the lives of everyone around them.

Often accompanying substance use disorders is the denial that the individual has a problem, which allows situations to escalate, unchecked, to dangerous levels. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that individuals with substance use disorders receive treatment from licensed medical and psychological professionals and take the necessary steps to recover.
